Cassandra Hettinger of Charlotte Fever interview

Cassandra Hettinger ~ Charlotte Fever

How did Charlotte Fever begin? How did you both meet? Alex and I have been friends for more than 10 years now! I met him through a mutual friend while I was in music school. They were playing together in a psych-rock band that I really liked and which I joined at some point. It was a lot of fun but after a while we decided that we wanted to have our own project, just the two of us, where we could work more spontaneously and tackle funnier themes in terms of lyrics. That’s how we ended up creating Charlotte Fever 4 years ago :)

Your music encapsulates everything I love about France! It's sexy, cool, fun... It feels very dreamy yet it has an edge to it. What do you hope people feel when they listen to your songs? Wow, thank you so much! I am so glad that you feel this way about our music, precisely because this is exactly what we are looking for haha.. The musical universe we are trying to create is very colourful, sensual and cheerful. Our goal is really to make people feel good and have fun. When we are writing a new song, we have tons of images in our heads: we always visualize a very cinematic scenery, idealized beautiful places. We like to tell stories and bring our audience away from the daily hustle.

It must have been very exciting to have your music feature on Netflix's 'Emily in Paris'. It works so perfectly on the show. Tell us a little bit about how that came about? It was very exciting indeed, we popped the champagne when our label told us that it was really happening!
As our label manager knows that we see our music as a cinematographic object, he thought that it would be great to feature some songs in movies or series and started to reach out to some producers. So the reality of all this is that the process is not very interesting: the producer listens to some tracks online, checks if it matches with the scenery he has in mind and once he says "OK" we just pray that the scene is not cut during editing haha.
We are very glad that our music made it and super proud to have two songs featured, especially in this show!

What inspires you both? Do you travel a lot and keep it spontaneous, or do you like to follow a particular routine? Through Charlotte Fever, we do travel a lot and that is something we really love. But so far, we mostly found inspiration in the travels we did not really do. For instance, when we were working on our first EP, we had tropical jungles in mind. This was definitely inspiring in terms of rhythmic patterns, instruments or melodies. But the fun thing is that none of us had ever been in a jungle or anywhere tropical, it was all a fantasy in our heads. So when we went on tour in Central America a few months after, it was actually amazing to play our songs in the scenery we had dreamt about when composing them!
But to be fully honest, inspiration mainly comes from our daily lives. Our routine is to go to the studio, have a coffee together, chat about the news and our lives, make some jokes... Most of our lyric ideas come from here for instance.

What are you currently listening to? I am super curious and listen to a lot of different music styles! Lately I mostly listen to pop from all over the world (French, US, UK, Korean, Japanese, etc.) but I also listen to rock, metal or rap, I really have no limit. Truth be told, these past few months I have had an obsession for Dalida, who is an incredible French-Italian singer that you must discover if you don't already know her!

How do you feel in the Lisette dress? :) Lisette has a very baby doll vibe that I absolutely love! The pastel tones of the vintage gingham give the dress a cute and romantic look that fits perfectly with the mood of our song "Septembre". Actually, it was immediately obvious in my mind that I would wear it for the scenes shot at sunset and when I put it on while on set, I really got into the character of a dreamy lover, wandering through French Normandy in the twilight of summer.

Most inspiring place for you creatively at the moment (in France / Paris)? I wish that I could say that it's in parks or when I am close to the sea, but really it's in our studio located in the heart of Paris that I am the most inspired. We see the sky, we are together having fun, that's just the best.

Summer is coming to an end but what do you love most about Paris in the Summer? What I love the most about Paris in the summer is that there is no one in the streets, haha. Paris without Parisians is just the best, you don't have to rush when walking in the streets, you don't have to queue anymore to go to cafes and restaurants, everything is calm... To sum it up, you can finally fully enjoy living in such a beautiful city and to me, it's perfection!

Favourite flower? Without a doubt, thistle! It is beautiful when it is fresh and beautiful when it's dry.

Favourite breakfast? Coffee of course, un allongé! The first of many actually, as I am really addicted to it.

Favourite musician / artist? I really admire Kevin Parker from Tame Impala a lot. I am also a huge fan of Daniel Balavoine and Serge Gainsbourg, so really it's hard to pick just one!
